Infantino: ‘I want Buffon in FIFA’

FIFA President Gianni Infantino wants Gianluigi Buffon to join the organisation when he retires, and is “sad” that Italy aren’t at the World Cup.

The Azzurri were eliminated by Sweden in the play-offs, so won’t be at the World Cup for the first time since 1958, something the Swiss-Italian head of world football’s governing body laments.

“I’m sad, I’m sad for the World Cup,” Infantino told Gazzetta della Sport.

“I could almost cry, the first Italian FIFA President and Italy is not there…

“I think it’s a collective sadness, we’re talking about a team with great tradition, who give their best in these events.

“But whoever is in Russia deserved to qualify, and in any case Italy stayed out with an Italian President: do we need anything else to say we’re honest and clean?

“I would have liked to have given the cup to Buffon though.

“Could he take a role in FIFA? I’m going to go in person and get him.”
