‘I wouldn’t like to see Neymar in a Real Madrid shirt’, admits Spain’s prime minister and fan Mariano Rajoy

Spain’s prime minister and Real Madrid fan Mariano Rajoy has admitted he would prefer Los Blancos not to sign Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazilian forward has been linked with a summer move to Madrid despite only joining PSG in a world record €222 million from Barcelona last August.

But ahead of Real taking on PSG in the Champions League last-16 on Wednesday, Rajoy told AS: ‘I wouldn’t like to see Neymar in the white shirt.

‘I don’t know about [Kylian Mbappe] but Bale, Benzema and Cristiano were great, and within a few months, people are doubting them. We should have a bit more perspective. I believe in them.’

Holders Real Madrid have struggled in La Liga this season as they sit 17 points behind leaders Barcelona.

Rajoy admits the Spanish giants may not be favourites, but he is confident they can progress to the quarter-finals.

‘Looking at it rationally, you might think that they’ll give us a beating, but anything can happen in these kinds of games,’ he said.

‘Let’s not forget that this is Real Madrid and that the Champions League is their competition – especially now that they are out of the running for La Liga and they’re out of the Copa del Rey.

‘It’s more or less the same team as last season and we’re talking about the defending champions – the side which has won three of the last four Champions Leagues. I think we can eliminate PSG.’
